Major Howard
In 1977, the then Captain Gordon Howard and Mrs Captain Katharine Howard of the Salvation Army moved to Harare from Howard Hospital in Chiweshe, where they were initially stationed on their first overseas posting.
Captain Howard was installed as the first Administrator of the Athol Evans Complex, working with Sir Athol Evans and the Combined Services Organisations Trust, to raise much-needed funds to start building the Athol Evans Hospital.
Mrs Captain Katharine Howard became the first Matron of the hospital, leading the nursing staff and caring for the first residents of the hospital when it opened in August 1977.
The Howards have devoted their lives to developing and managing the Complex through its 36 years of existence and 1600 residents. Major Howard raised the funds needed to develop the Complex into what it is today, building the two frail care wards of 35 beds each as well as the laundry, kitchen and office buildings.
Following this, and in order to cope with the increasing demand, Major Howard oversaw the project to expand the complex by enlarging the kitchen, laundry and lounge, and adding four new residential wards.
In 1990, the Complex began constructing two bedroom retirement cottages, and the first ten were occupied by the end of 1991.
The chapel was built in 1996 and following this was the construction of the Community Care Centre.
Major Howard sadly passed away in May 2011 but his legacy is very much a part of the Complex.
